From the A66 join the B6277. Approx 1 mile before Middleton-in-Teesdale and before crossing the River Tees, Holwick is signposted straight ahead as the road takes a sharp right hand bend. Three miles down this narrow road the Strathmore Arms is in the left hand side,- with the car park on the opposite side.
Following the 2.5 mile round walk of Low Force and Holwick from the Car Park at Bowlees cross the River Tees on the historic suspension bridge known as Wynch Bridge. Then follow the river down the Pennine Way to Scoberry Bridge. This is a delightful section of the Tees as it cascades and flows through banks of rocks. Just before Scoberry Bridge take the public footpath which leaves the Pennine Way through the fields to join the single track road through Holwick. At the road go down the hill the short distance to the Strathmore Arms.
Enjoy refreshments or a meal in this idyllic setting -weather permitting our beer garden is exceptional.
The return round walk follows the single track road back up the hill, getting ever closer to the amazing rock formations left by the last ice age at Holwick Scars. As the road turns sharply right an option is to continue through the Scars - or maybe save for your next visit. Follow the road downhill, until it finishes at the cattle grid. The path then leads through the hay fields, truly beautiful in Spring and Summer, and back to Wynch Bridge.
Then:
Back over Wynch Bridge and return to the car park at Bowlees
Or:
Time and energy permitting do not cross the river and keep on the Pennine Way the 2 miles or so to High Force Waterfall. A stunning view of the falls is suddenly provided through a small track off the path through Juniper trees. The main path carries on to the head of the falls. Care is needed as although well trodden the drops are steep and the falls dangerous if approached too closely. Whilst the Pennine Way walk continues the next bridge up the river is a few miles and unless following a detailed map return to Wynch Bridge and then Bowlees the same route back.
